Hair loss, while traditionally associated with men, is an unfortunate reality for a number of women going through menopause. Hair loss can result from fluctuating hormone levels and is often one of the first things noticed when going through menopause. As distressing as it can be, there are a number of remedies capable of stopping and even reversing menopausal hair loss.

What Causes Hair Loss?

A single strand of hair will grow for several years, then naturally fall out and be replaced by new growth. Obviously, if hair fall-out exceeds hair growth then thinning or baldness occurs. Hair thinning is also a common sign of aging as there is a reduction in the levels of production of natural hormones. Women are predisposed to general hair thinning while men have genetically predisposed receptors which results in male pattern baldness.

There are many reasons a woman may find her hair thinning or falling out. These include:

  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Birth control pills
  • Tight ponytails and headbands, chemical hair treatments, improper use of heated styling tools can all cause breakage, called local trauma.
  • Many medicines have a side-effect of hair loss, with steroids and chemotherapy the most obvious culprits among a very long list.

Stress can affect your hair the same way it affects other major organs like the heart. Physical trauma as well as mental trauma can cause hair loss and thinning and may even result in hair problems 3 to 6 months after an event has occurred. Try to identify if this is the case or if your life is just too busy and try to make some changes.

If you notice marked signs of hair loss and are concerned, a general rule of thumb is to head straight to your doctor or a dermatologist to rule out any serious health issues. There are many changes you can make in your daily routines and habits that will improve the health and look of your hair.

What Are Some Hair Loss Remedies?

Changes in diet and improved hair care can often remedy hair loss. Increased intake of iron and vitamins (whether via supplements or naturally through fruits and vegetables) can promote hair growth, along with de-stressing activities such as regular exercise like yoga. Furthermore, natural remedies that target hormonal imbalance may also prove an effective and safe solution given that a high percentage of hair loss is caused by changes in hormone levels. The combination of natural supplements and healthy lifestyle is the safest option for preventing hair loss.
