A healthy amount of sleep is extremely important to a woman who wants to function during the daytime, and keep on top of her game. Many women who are going through perimenopause or menopause find themselves suffering from sleep disorders that may be induced by night sweats, a stressful lifestyle, or shifting hormone levels. Some women find themselves held hostage by sleep disorders which can affect every aspect of their lives.
Help may be at hand. Recent studies have found that acupuncture can help women suffering from sleep disorders, along with several other symptoms of menopause. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh recruited two groups of menopausal women suffering from sleep disorders. One was treated with acupuncture, which focused on areas of the body linked to menopause, and the other was given a standard course of acupuncture to help the flow of energy around the body.
The results were interesting; with women in the 'Menopause Acupuncture' group finding that their problems with sleep disorders were improved over the course of this research. The women who took the normal course of acupuncture found little improvement in sleep disorders specifically brought on by menopause.
Overall the researchers at Pittsburgh found that acupuncture which targets areas of the body connected to menopause decreases the damaging effect of sleep disorders, an alternative to hormone changing supplements and treatments which are also on offer to solve sleep disorders. This comes as welcome news for many women in need of a good night's sleep.
