How water can help you lose menopausal weight
It may sound tedious, but for most people it’s very true. Especially if you’re noticing an expanding waistline during menopause, drinking more water is essential to get you back in shape. Keep reading to find out how hydration can help you lose your menopausal weight.
Why does water work?
If your goal is weight loss, water can help quell the thirst sensations that you may mistake for hunger pains. Research shows that thirsty people often turn to food instead of fluids because these body signals are closely related. If you’re hungry, try drinking a glass of water; then wait. If you still have the urge to eat after a few minutes, you’ll know for sure that you’re craving food instead of fluids.
In addition to being a true gauge for hunger, water actually speeds up your metabolism so that you burn calories faster. One of the organs responsible for turning fat into energy is the liver, and water helps your liver work more efficiently.
Many people forget that there are certain foods that have high water content, such as most fruits and vegetables. Eating healthier, non-processed foods like these will not only satiate your hunger, but add to your water intake for the day. As an added bonus, these foods are also low in calories, so they won’t wreck your diet the way fatty prepackaged snack foods would.
What’s the trick?
• Drink water 15 to 20 minutes before every meal. This will cause you to consumer fewer calories.
• Add ice. Your body uses more energy to digest cold water than water that is room temperature.
• Make it flavored. If you don’t like the taste of water (or the lack thereof), squeeze in some lemon juice. You can also add frozen diced fruit along with your ice.
How much water should I drink exactly?
You’ve probably heard that you should drink eight glasses of water every day. That’s only the beginning. If you’re trying to shed pounds, you need to drink more than the standard 64 ounces (eight glasses). As a general guideline, divide the number of pounds you weigh by two; this number will tell you how many ounces you need to drink every day. For example, a 150-pound person would need to drink 75 ounces, or about nine and a half glasses, of water each day.
