What Causes Night Sweats?

As mentioned before, there are many reasons why a woman might suffer from night sweats. Below are some of the more common causes.

Menopause

A menopausal woman's body will undergo a drastic change in hormones as it slowly stops ovulating and reaches a point of infertility. The fluctuation of hormones is what causes women to experience many physical and emotional side effects.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can cause upsetting side effects. This treatment containing sex hormones is often used to replace those that a woman's body has lost during menopause. HRT has been reported to help relieve some of the menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, nausea, fatigue, and night sweats. HRT should be used under strict medical care, because it can produce serious side effects and can increase some women's risk for developing cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Antipyretics

Medications that alter body's temperature can trigger night sweats.

Pregnancy

Hormonal fluctuations during early pregnancy can result in night sweats. It is common for hormonal fluctuation during early pregnancy to result in night sweats.

Cancer

Treatments like chemotherapy may induce night sweats. Night sweats may also indicate that one has the beginning stages of cancer, often lymphoma.

Antidepressants

These and other medications can have side effects such as night sweats.

How Can I Treat My Night Sweats?

The course of treatment a woman should undergo depends on the cause of her night sweats. If she is not experiencing night sweats as a result of a serious medical condition, then she may be able to alleviate them by simple lifestyle changes. These include avoiding triggers, maintaining a healthy diet, and exercising regularly.

Sometimes, other treatments such as herbal remedies and vitamin supplements aid in replenishing the hormones that have been lost. Some women may have more severe night sweats and will choose to use more invasive methods such as drugs and surgery.

Other tips to help manage night sweats include:

Wear breathable, cotton pajamas to reduce the severity of night sweats. •   Avoid spicy foods and hot drinks
•   Wear light and breathable pajamas
•   Sleep near an open window or fan
•   Lower the temperature in the room or use air conditioning
