What causes heavy night sweats?

night sweats hyperhydrosisHeavy night sweats (nocturnal hyperhydrosis) during menopause, which often seem to go hand in hand with daytime hot flashes, are caused, quite simply, by fluctuating estrogen levels that lead the body to think that its temperature is much higher than it truly is. During menopause, estrogen levels oscillate, causing the hypothalamus (responsible for regulating body temperature) to incorrectly perceive an abnormally high body temperature and raise a false alarm in an attempt to cool the body. This causes heavy night sweats.

Heavy night sweats plague countless women throughout the world. The experience of waking up sweat-drenched, cold, and anxious, is not a pleasant one, and it can leave many women just what is causing these wet, clammy surprises known as night sweats. However, it is not an unusual experience by far: as much as 85% of menopausal women will deal with the unpleasant feelings and effects of heavy night sweats.

Can causes of heavy night sweats be eliminated?

Clearly, understanding what causes heavy night sweats is key in finding relief.

There are several different causes of heavy night sweats, but if menopause is the culprit (the hormonal imbalance described above), there are many different paths to alleviating the accompanying discomfort. Exercising regularly, avoiding spicy and acidic foods, and sleeping in a cool area will all help to minimize the occurrence of night sweats.

night sweats relaxationStress is a common cause of heavy night sweats, simply because it causes the heart rate to rise and the body’s temperature to increase along with it. If life is stressful, some women may find it useful to turn to relaxation techniques, such as paced breathing and yoga, to get rid of night sweats.

Some lesser-known causes of heavy night sweats

Insufficient amount of sleep (7-8 hours are recommended for all women, but especially for sufferers of heavy night sweats.).

Sedentary lifestyles – inactive women are much more likely to experience night sweats (and more intense menopause symptoms overall) than their active counterparts.

night sweats dietExposure to warm weather – if the weather is hot, menopausal women suffering from heavy night sweats should stay inside if possible.

Hot tubs/Jacuzzis – these may help in relaxation, but they raise the body’s temperature significantly.

A diet low in Vitamins B, C, and D, and especially calcium.

While the cause of heavy night sweats during menopause is due primarily to the hormonal imbalance, it is possible to make lifestyle changes that can decrease heavy night sweats. A lifestyle examination can reveal many ways in which potential causes of heavy night sweats can be eliminated.

It is also possible to experience night sweats before menopause or for a non-menopause-related reason. Women who believe that the cause of their heavy night sweats is not menopause should consult a physician immediately, because much more serious conditions can also cause heavy night sweats.
