Shopping tips for minimizing night sweats during menopause

Everyone has to go shopping. Food shopping, clothes shopping, medicine shopping; what you buy is generally dependant upon your needs. Well, unfortunately, now you’ve entered menopause and you are experiencing bothersome symptoms like night sweats. These attacks of intense heat that overtake your body and leave you in a dripping mess in the middle of the night can be minimized with a little creativity in your shopping cart.

Below you will find some ideas to keep in mind next time you are at the store, and you won’t find rushing to the geriatric section among them.

The grocery store

No one likes being told what they can or can’t eat, but if it makes the difference between a restful and disrupted night’s sleep, it may be time to take notes.

Don’t go down the Mexican aisle.

Nothing against our Latin neighbors to the south, but spicy foods will literally raise your body temperature and can induce night sweats. Cayenne pepper and dried mustard should also be avoided.

Do season your food.

It’s not necessarily “go hot or go home,” there are some herbs and spices available to keep your food from being bland and your body from overheating. Sage, lemongrass, and white peppercorns all have cooling properties.

The clothing aisle

As you have aged, clothes shopping has probably lost some of its appeal and maybe even been reduced to dread. Pajama shopping may seem even more frivolous as your husband’s boxers will do just fine. Well, only if they are 100% cotton.

Only buy natural fibers.

Natural fibers allow your body to breathe and to receive circulation of fresh air. Fabrics like silk or jersey made from bamboo are also less likely to cause irritation to the skin. The next best thing to wear is your birthday suit.

Splurge on underwear.

I know nobody sees it, all the more reason you should buy underwear for you and not someone else! You don’t have to buy a thong or those bootie shorts, just make sure they are made from natural fibers and they fit comfortably.

The pharmacy

Choose products to enhance your natural beauty.

Instead of picking up a bottle of heat-activated curl booster and a hair dryer, try some moose to accentuate your hair’s waves and let it air dry. Processes that create heat around your body, like hair drying, can definitely induce a night sweat.

Recommendation

For some women, lifestyle changes alone are not enough to combat stubborn menopausal symptoms. In these cases, you should always talk with your doctor and discuss alternative treatments. However, medicine is almost always more effective if you live a healthy lifestyle, too. For more information on night sweats, follow this link.
