Night sweats, or sometimes called hyperhydrosis, are fairly common and have been defined in a few different ways. One definition says a night sweat occurs when the person wakes up drenched in sweat that causes them to change clothes.

Another definition says simply a night has occurred when a person sweats when they sleep. Although uncomfortable, night sweats are not typically a sign of a medical problem or condition.

Night sweats are fairly common while in or around the stage of menopause, but also can happen at other times too.

• Drug or alcohol abuse.

• Nightmares.
• Hyperthyroidism.
• Nocturnal Hypoglycaemia.
• Medications.
• Antidepressants.

• Hypoglycemic agents — medications that decrease the level of sugar in your blood.
• Hormone therapy — medications that regulate the amount of hormones in your body.
• Sleep Apnoea.
• Gastro-oesophageal Reflux disease.
• Endometriosis.
