How to cope with your menopausal mood swings at the office
With all the chaos and surprise sprung on professional women, it may be tough to tell the difference between a normal reaction and a manic mood swing. A screaming and crying middle-aged woman is never an asset, menopausal or not. You can't always help your manic feelings, but it is possible to exercise some restraint.
Most mood disturbances are a result of a hormonal imbalance. In menopausal women, estrogen and serotonin levels are disturbed. Through a combination of exercise and awareness, you can overcome, or at least hide, some of your mood swings. Below you will find a list of how to cope with mood disturbances on the clock.
Walk to work.
You need exercise and walking is a great way to get your cardio, especially if you live more than 20 minutes from your office. It's also an effective way to take some cool down if you had a rough morning with the kids.
Communicate with your boss.
Especially if she is a woman, she will understand. It may be helpful to talk with some of your coworkers in case you lose a grip from time to time and they get caught in your line of fire. Just explain it isn't them, it's you. Really.
Drink water.
Lots of water. Staying hydrated is key to overall wellness. Plus, it gives you a little break every time you have to use the restroom.
Smoke break?
Fresh air break! Smoking is hazardous to all kinds of health, including mental. So steer clear of the smoking lounge, but do move away from your computer during the day. You'll feel better and probably be more productive.
Midday escape.
Also known as lunchtime. Get out of the office. Have some time to yourself. Read a few chapters of a book to re-center or use the time to catch up on errands so you won't feel stressed after work. Stay away from fast food; it will leave you drained and cranky later in the day.
Have a snack.
Keep your blood sugar at a normal level and treat yourself to a little chocolate and piece of fruit. Having a cup of decaffeinated tea will keep you relaxed.
