A normal period lasts anywhere between three and seven days, but that is not to say that many women have periods much longer than that. Long and irregular periods are uncomfortable and a pain to deal with.

It is a good idea to keep track of your periods. Mark down the last day from the last period cycle and the first day of the new one. Keep track of your periods from month to month and also mark down spotting and pain if they occur.

What are Irregular Periods?

Irregular periods are common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal birth control, and hormone treatments. At the beginning of the reproductive years, with the first period, it is very common for a young woman to experience irregular periods as her body adjusts to the changes.

If you have been bleeding for more than two weeks it is probably time to see the doctor. Constant blood loss can result in an iron deficiency called anemia.

While there can be many contributing factors, here is a list of the most common causes of long and irregular periods:

• Stress
• Illness or physiological imbalance – Thyroid conditions can greatly affect the duration of a period.
• Dietary problems – Eat right. Your body needs nutrients and the proper substances to maintain itself. Too much exercise – doing exercise is good but make sure you’re not over loading your body.
• Drugs – Both prescription and recreational drugs can induce irregularities.
• Break in routine

• Sexual activity
• Anxiety about pregnancy
• New cycle – Some young girls at the onset of the periods can experience irregularity while they bodies adjust.

Treatment for Long and Irregular Periods

As mentioned above, stress, fatigue and anxiety can bring on long and irregular periods but if this is the first time you have experienced this then it is advised to see a doctor. Your doctor can run blood tests and check your endometrium levels.

Also, exercise is very important to maintain healthy hormone levels and create a balance between the mind and the body but it is important to not over exercise. Exercise can often relieve tension in the body and relax the mind but too much exercise could add extra stress and worsen irregular periods.
