Hair Loss during Menopause

Everybody will suffer from hair loss as they get older and the idea that it is only men who loose their hair is incorrect. In fact hair loss during menopause is extremely common. However whereas men may go bald women usually suffer from thinning hair. The appearance of hair loss during menopause is more frequently than not due to the hair loosing its thickness. On average women will loose up to 100 strands of hair a day and it is only if hair loss during menopause occurs at a greater rate than this that women have to be concerned. Hair loss during menopause is also called estrogenic alopecia.

Why does Hair Loss during Menopause Occur?

hair loss medicationsHair thinning and hair loss during menopause, AKA estrogenic alopecia, usually occurs because of lowering estrogen levels. Hair loss during menopause that is experienced due to an estrogen deficiency is not uncommon and up to 15% of North American women may suffer from hair loss during menopause. Hair loss during menopause occurs because estrogen hormones help the hair to grow at a rapid healthy and rate. When estrogen hormone levels become imbalanced hair loss during menopause may then take place.

A volumnizing shampoo can help to thicken the hair and give it a healthy appearance. It is important for women to look for ingredients such as wheat and rice proteins, which penetrate the hair strands and thicken them out. Although a volumnizing shampoo will not combat hair loss during menopause it can help with the appearance of hair loss during menopause.

Flexible Hold Hair Sprays
Stiff hair sprays can worsen the effects of hair loss during menopause. When stiff hair sprays are applied to hair too liberally they can cause hair breakages. However a flexible hold hair spray can keep the hair in place without breaking hair strands and causing hair loss during menopause.

Find the right length
Often women resign themselves to cutting their hair short to cope with hair loss during menopause. However often a cut between the chin and the collarbone can be flattering and disguise hair loss during menopause. Additionally wearing hair wavy can camouflage hair loss during menopause (rather than damaging hair with straightening devices and other products).

Find the right cut
Many women tend to believe that if they have short layers in their hair it will help to cover hair loss during menopause and create volume. However choppy haircuts do not assist with hair loss during menopause and can often thin the hair out. Long gentle layers are often more effective.

However if hair loss during menopause is becoming a large problem women should discuss available medications with their doctor. Alopecia is not something that women have to live with, and there are treatments available. Click here to read about treating hair loss during menopause with medication.
